East Knox County

Mascot, TN Home Improvement, Inside and Out

Mascot is a quieter corner of east Knox County near the Holston River, with homes that range from older country places to more recent builds. Here is how we approach the projects that come up most.

Start outside: what weather does to a house

Homes in Mascot face the same East Tennessee pattern as the rest of the county: hot, humid summers, heavy rain, and freeze-thaw swings in winter. Over time, that shows up in predictable places. Before talking about kitchens, it is worth walking the outside of the house.

  • Trim, fascia and window sills. Wood that holds water after rain starts to soften. Catching it early means replacing a board instead of a section of wall.
  • Peeling or chalky paint. Paint protects the wood underneath. Once it fails, moisture gets in. Proper exterior prep, scraping, sanding and priming bare spots, matters more than the brand of paint.
  • Porch steps and railings. These take the most wear and are a safety issue when loose.
  • Decks. Older decks may need new boards, a refinish, or a rebuild if the frame has rotted.

Our exterior and interior painting and carpentry work address all of these together, so you are not juggling separate crews.

Inside the house

Floors that have seen some living

Many Mascot homes have hardwood somewhere, whether original to the house or added later. If it is in decent shape, sanding and refinishing can bring it back. If boards are cupped, stained or soft, the cause needs to be found first. Homes near the Holston River and in low spots can have damp crawlspaces, and moisture from below is a common reason floors fail. When replacement is the answer, our flooring services cover hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, tile and carpet.

Lower levels with potential

Homes built into a hillside, including split-levels, often have a lower floor that is partly above ground. That makes it a good candidate for a basement conversion: a family room, a home office or a guest bedroom. We check for dampness and headroom, then handle framing, drywall, flooring and trim.

Bathrooms past their prime

A bathroom that has been in daily use for decades usually shows it in grout, caulk and a vanity that is too low. Remodels here tend to focus on durability: a tiled walk-in shower, a better exhaust fan to fight humidity, and flooring that does not mind water. See our remodeling services for the full scope.

Lighting and ceiling fans

Older rooms often have a single overhead fixture or none at all. Swapping in a ceiling fan with a light helps in humid summers and makes a bedroom more comfortable. Our light and ceiling fan installation is a common add-on during painting or flooring work. If a project needs new circuits, we tell you upfront that it requires a licensed electrician.

Putting the work in the right order

When a house needs several things, sequence saves money and frustration. As a rule of thumb, we suggest this order:

  1. Fix what lets water in. Rotted trim, failing paint and porch damage come first, because water damage spreads.
  2. Do the messy interior work. Demolition, drywall and anything that makes dust happens before finishes.
  3. Paint walls and ceilings. Painting before new floors keeps drips off the finished surface.
  4. Install flooring and trim. Baseboards go on last and get a final coat of paint.

You do not have to do everything at once, but knowing the order helps you avoid redoing finished work later.

Questions From Mascot Homeowners

What exterior work can you do besides painting?

Exterior updates can include replacing rotted trim and fascia boards, repairing or rebuilding porch steps and railings, adding a deck, installing a fence, and painting or staining siding and trim. We look at the whole outside of the house and tell you what needs attention first.

My hardwood floors are cupping. Is that a flooring problem or something else?

Cupping, where the edges of boards rise above the centers, is usually a moisture problem. In East Tennessee it often traces back to a damp crawlspace or a leak. Replacing the floor without addressing the moisture tends to bring the problem back, so we look for the cause first.

Can a split-level or hillside basement become a real living space?

Often, and homes built into a slope tend to have an advantage: part of the lower level is above grade, with windows and sometimes a door to the yard. We check for dampness, ceiling height and egress, then plan framing, drywall, flooring and trim to finish it.

Do you take on small jobs out in east Knox County?

Yes. Not every project is a remodel. Replacing a few rooms of flooring, hanging new light fixtures and ceiling fans, or painting a couple of bedrooms are all jobs we handle.
