Light and Ceiling Fan Installation

Swapping a dated fixture, hanging pendants over an island or replacing a wobbly ceiling fan can change how a room looks and feels. We install it securely, level and on the right mounting hardware, and we tell you upfront if any part of the job calls for a licensed electrician.

Lighting and fan work we handle

Lighting is one of the simplest upgrades that still makes a big visual difference. Most of the jobs we do use existing boxes and wiring in place, which keeps the project focused on the fixture itself:

  • Ceiling fan replacement and new fans on existing ceiling boxes, including downrods for vaulted and high ceilings
  • Pendant lights over kitchen islands, dining tables and entryways
  • Track lighting and monorail systems for kitchens, hallways and display walls
  • Flush and semi-flush mount fixtures, chandeliers and vanity lights
  • Dimmer switches and fan speed controls
  • Outdoor fixtures such as porch lights, wall lanterns and covered-patio fans rated for damp or wet locations

When to replace a fan or fixture

Some reasons are purely about style, but others are practical. It is worth replacing a fan or light when it hums, wobbles or clicks no matter how it is adjusted, when a fixture runs hot or flickers with new bulbs, when the finish is corroded on an outdoor light, or when a room simply does not have enough light where you need it. A fan with a light kit can also add comfort to a bedroom or porch that currently has only a basic fixture.

Start with what is in the ceiling

The fixture you can see is held up by a box you cannot. That box matters more than most homeowners realize.

Light boxes versus fan-rated boxes

A ceiling fan is heavier than most light fixtures, and it moves. The constant vibration loosens anything that is not secured properly. That is why fans must be mounted to an electrical box listed for fan support, attached directly to a joist or to a brace that spans between joists. Many older homes have plastic or lightweight metal boxes that were only ever meant for a light. When we replace a light with a fan, checking and, if needed, replacing that box is the first step.

Heavy fixtures

Large chandeliers and some oversized pendants also need solid support. The fixture's instructions list its weight and how it must be mounted, and we follow them.

Sloped ceilings

Vaulted and angled ceilings need a fan with a sloped-ceiling adapter and a downrod long enough for the blades to clear the ceiling. Pendants on a slope use a swivel canopy so they hang straight.

Choosing fixtures that fit the room

A few practical points help you shop with confidence:

  • Fan size. Blade span should suit the size of the room. A small fan in a large living room will not move enough air, and an oversized fan in a small bedroom can feel overpowering.
  • Ceiling height. Fans and pendants need enough clearance below them for people to walk comfortably. Low ceilings call for flush-mount, or "hugger," fans.
  • Light color. LED bulbs and integrated fixtures list a color temperature. Warmer light suits bedrooms and living rooms, while cooler light is often preferred for task areas. Keeping one color temperature throughout a room looks more polished.
  • Dimmability. If you want a dimmer, confirm the fixture or bulbs are dimmable and pair them with an LED-compatible dimmer to avoid flicker and hum.
  • Outdoor ratings. Fixtures on covered porches should be damp-rated at minimum; those exposed to rain need a wet rating.

Where our work ends and an electrician's begins

We are a home improvement contractor, not a licensed electrical contractor, and we are upfront about that line. Replacing a fixture, fan or switch on an existing, properly working circuit is the kind of work we handle regularly. When a project calls for new circuits, new wiring runs, panel changes, or added recessed lighting where no wiring exists, that work belongs to a licensed electrician, and a permit may be required. We will tell you during the estimate if your plan crosses that line, so there are no surprises.

We also stop and let you know if we find something that does not look right when a fixture comes down, such as scorched wires, missing grounds or connections made without a box.

What happens on install day

  1. Power to the circuit is shut off at the breaker and confirmed off before any work starts.
  2. The old fixture is removed and the box, its mounting and the wiring connections are inspected.
  3. Mounting hardware is upgraded where needed, such as a fan-rated brace.
  4. The new fixture is assembled, hung, leveled and connected following the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Fans are balanced, and every light, switch, dimmer and remote is tested.
  6. Packaging and old fixtures are cleaned up and taken away unless you would like to keep them.

A little preparation helps

  • Have your fixtures on site, and check that every part is in the box before install day.
  • Clear the floor and furniture under each fixture so a ladder can be set safely.
  • Know where your breaker panel is and whether the circuits are labeled.
  • If you are also painting the ceiling, plan to paint first, so the new fixture goes up on a finished surface.

Lighting as part of a larger update

New light fixtures are often the finishing touch on a kitchen or bathroom remodel, and ceiling repairs around an old fixture are easy to handle alongside our drywall work. If you are looking for more ways to modernize a room, our post on modern home upgrade ideas is a good place to start.

Light and Fan Services FAQs

Can you put a ceiling fan where my light fixture is?

Often, yes, but a standard light fixture box is not designed to hold the weight and motion of a fan. We check the box and its support, and if it is not rated for fan support we replace it with a fan-rated box or brace anchored to the framing before hanging the fan.

Why does my ceiling fan wobble?

Common causes are a loose mounting bracket, blades that are bent or not seated evenly, or a box that is not secured to the framing. We tighten and balance the fan, and if the mounting itself is the problem, we correct it.

Why do my LED lights flicker or buzz on a dimmer?

Many older dimmers were designed for incandescent bulbs and do not work well with LEDs. Replacing the dimmer with one rated for LED loads, and using bulbs labeled dimmable, usually solves it.

How high should pendants hang over a kitchen island?

The goal is to light the counter without blocking sightlines across the room. We hold the fixtures at the planned height before cutting cords or chains, so you can see the spacing and height before anything is final.

Do you install lights where there is no existing wiring?

New circuits and new wiring runs are work for a licensed electrician. If your plan needs them, we tell you during the estimate so the electrical work can be handled properly before or alongside our installation.
